I recently looked into Nick Turpin for the outcomes stage of my project and his series called "On the Night Bus" really interested me as he used a raw story that many people know of but something that I haven't seen any photographers do before. I wanted to share his work as I would love to create photos like this and in a blog coming soon, I will show some of the photos that my group created that look similar.
Firstly I want to give a bit of context on Nick Turpin is a 51 year old photographer who specialises in street, advertising and design photography. Born in London most of his work is based in the city and around the UK as well as in Lyon, France. "On the Night Bus" was one of two books he has published, the other being 10: 10 Years of In-public. As soon as you search his name though "On the Night Bus is the first thing that comes up, meaning that it is his most popular work. I can see why it would be as its the narrative of the story is to create a different perspective of a bus journey which can be seen as scary at times due to the location and time of night, but actually seems innocent and calming when seeing it through the eyes of Turpin.
The reason I wanted to use this as an example of what to look at in terms of the outcome for our group project was that it followed the same storyline. Both using transport at night, but ours will be more mysterious at the end rather than trying to convey a more innocent approach. For our project we want to make sure that the story has a twist and the end so I think at first looking at Turpin's work for inspiration will be helpful as it will give us a sense of how to create a more chilled atmosphere to an otherwise intense background, but then afterwards if we take our own artistic direction and try to come up with ideas on how to turn our theme more strange and give mystery to the photo it will work.
