Who here has been subject to buying an outfit just for Instagram then never posting an outfit in it because they're scared of being called an *insert Kate Saunders voice here* an outfit repeater. Well don't worry sadly you're not the only one, I and many others have done it too but there is a way of changing that. Digital clothing. Yep, you heard me right clothing that you'll never see yourself actually wearing, only in a photo. So what does it look like and who started this new trend? Well, you're about to find out.
Carlings was the first brand to add digital clothing collection to their brand back in November 2018 and since they have been the main brand that has shown the digital clothes on their website. This begs the question why? Why are they the only brand to have digital clothing? Well, I believe that this is due to the factor of the brand is more of one of kind of choice. I don't think that many other brands could do the same Carlings is now know for its digital wear so I don't other brands want to compete with that. The only thing that makes me question whether that is true is the fact that there were articles about the digital clothing for a few months and now there isn't any, so it could be a case of the idea not being popular and just being a phase.
Sadly, this would actually make a lot of sense if the reason other brands aren't doing the same being because the topic isn't trendy anymore. This is due to how social media and news works. Just like fast fashion, the social age goes a fast pace meaning that something could be popular one moment and in the next few days, it won't be. The same things have happened to moustache shirt (oh wow remember them) and even to things like the bottle flip challenge (still can't do it). The fact that digital clothing, something that is ethical is gone due to it being based on social media means that it never really stood a chance. I think that this was probably the hardest thing about researching the clothing as personally, I love the idea and want others to do the same as we as a population are so wasteful with fashion. Especially when fashion is the second-largest polluter at the current time. Hopefully, in the future, the trend will get a revival like ripped jeans or chokers. Until then I'll be wearing the same 4 outfits and posting them on Instagram.
